What is Learning Loss?

Learning Loss refers to the loss of knowledge by children, due to disruption to schooling for whatever reason. The 6-week summer break is a fantastic time for everyone to relax, reflect, recharge and prepare for the next academic year (something which will be especially important after the crazy year we’ve had!). This year it provides an opportunity to catch-up and prepare for the return to school.

Along with the usual summer learning loss, this year we may expect that after having missed a large chunk of their regular class learning, that children return in the new academic year having forgotten even more of the previous years’ learning than usual.

So, what can be done?

Somehow a balance needs to be struck between giving the children time to relax and recharge after a difficult and unsettling year, whilst trying to help plug any gaps in their knowledge, or at the very least not forgetting everything they have been taught!

Setting fun, engaging tasks can be time consuming and worthless if pupils don’t complete them over the holidays because they lose them or forget that they are buried at the bottom of their bag under that soggy old banana!

New Era’s online learning platform, DB Primary, allows pupils to login whenever and wherever they want (providing they have internet access) and complete their learning. Using DB Primary, teachers can assign the children pre-made, self-marking activities from the Learning Library, create a sequence of activities for the children to complete as part of a learning pathway, create their own personalised activities, and more!

Minimal teacher time required- Teachers simply need to set up the pathway in advance and the system will take care of the rest. The activities will be presented to children to do when it suits them according to the schedule and they are all automatically marked with immediate feedback to the child.

Where to begin?

The documents below are designed to help you set up your summer communities on DB Primary and give you some practical guidance about what to set for your class over the summer to help keep their learning going (without having to do too much work over the precious summer break!)

How to create your virtual summer school

The documents below will guide you through the process of setting up your virtual summer school on DB Primary.

Summer Pathways

The documents below suggest 6 weeks worth of Learning Library activities which can be put into Pathways and then assigned to the children to complete.
